Reefer or refrigerated containers are containers that are connected with external electrical power in order to maintain weather sensitive products in specific temperatures which can range from minus 25 to plus 25 degrees Celsius.   The containers are fitted with a refrigerator unit which is connected with the carrying vessel’s electrical power supply. When the container is loaded on a truck’s trailer it can be powered by diesel powered generators which are attached to the container for its road journey.

Products like meat, vegetables, fruits, diary products etc. are usually transported with this type of containers.

Some refrigerated containers contain a water cooling system, which can be used if the reefer container is stored below deck on a vessel without adequate ventilation to remove the heat generated. But this type of reefer containers are more expensive. Nowadays, the new vessels use a ventilation system to reduce the cargo high temperatures and the water cooling reefers are not needed as much as in the past.

The most common dimensions for the reefer or refrigerated containers are:

  • 20feet
  • 40feet
  • 40feet high cube

Bellow we are listing for your reference information about the dimensions per container type in metric and imperial size. These dimensions are only listed to give you an idea. They are very close to the general standards that exist for these container types but before making any precise calculations for your products it is good to communicate with some freight agents or shipping lines in order to get the exact dimensions of the containers you will be using.
