Dry Standard Container Types

20ft standard container
Dry or Standard Containers are the typical container choice for products with standard packaging. They are called ‘ dry ‘ because they keep the products dry as they are shield from all sides and the top. The containers are opening only from one side using a double door method. The rest of the sides and the top are fixed.

The most common dimensions for dry containers are:

  • 20feet
  • 40feet
  • 40feet high cube
  • and in some occasions
  • 45feet

Dry Open Top Container Types

20ft Open Top Container
Dry Open Top Container Types are similar to the standard dry containers with the difference that instead of a fixed roof they have movable roof which can open to allow for loading and unloading when necessary. Companies which use cranes or rolling bridges to load their products use this type of containers. Examples of products that are loaded in such containers are long metal or aluminum profiles, pipes, machinery etc.

Open top containers
Cargo containers made of steel, both 20 and 40 feet. Same type as the standard dry containers, except that there is no roof. In place of a standard roof, the open tops are equipped with a tarpaulin made of rubber, held by steel bars Above the doors a moveable transverse bar allows for easier loading and unloading.

The most common dimensions for the dry open top containers are:

  • 20feet
  • 40feet
  • 40feet high cube

Flat Rack Fix or Folding End Containers

20ft Flat Rack Container
Flat rack with fix or folding end containers are suitable for heavy cargo which is usually over sized and is stored bulk. The containers are open from three sides (the top and the two lengthy sides), they have a stable floor and two walls that can fold whenever necessary. In such type of containers vehicles can also be loaded. In addition to the above the products that are loaded on these type of containers may not get damaged if they become wet.

The most common dimensions for the flat rack fix or folding end containers are:

  • 20feet
  • 40feet

Reefer or Refrigerated Containers

20ft Refrigerated or Reefer Container
Reefer or refrigerated containers are containers that are connected with external electrical power in order to maintain weather sensitive products in specific temperatures which can range from minus 25 to plus 25 degrees Celsius.   The containers are fitted with a refrigerator unit which is connected with the carrying vessel’s electrical power supply. When the container is loaded on a truck’s trailer it can be powered by diesel powered generators which are attached to the container for its road journey.

Products like meat, vegetables, fruits, diary products etc. are usually transported with this type of containers.

Some refrigerated containers contain a water cooling system, which can be used if the reefer container is stored below deck on a vessel without adequate ventilation to remove the heat generated. But this type of reefer containers are more expensive. Nowadays, the new vessels use a ventilation system to reduce the cargo high temperatures and the water cooling reefers are not needed as much as in the past.

The most common dimensions for the reefer or refrigerated containers are:

  • 20feet
  • 40feet
  • 40feet high cube

Tank Containers

20ft Tank Container
Tank containers are used to transfer safely, reliable and cost effective, bulk liquid products around the globe both hazardous and non-hazardous. They are large stainless steel containers that have a tube shape and are held in place using a 20-foot Iso frame. They may also be covered by insulation or protective layer of polyurethane and aluminium. Due to the Iso-frame that is keeping them in place they can be transported by road, sea, rail without any difficulties.

Loading and unloading is made possible in tank containers from the top and the bottom with the use of a pump in most of the cases. A standard tank container has a manhole and at least one valve on the top, and there is a valve at the bottom. Loading and unloading is done by connecting hoses of the loading and unloading facility to the valves of the tank. The loading and unloading process may also be determined by the installation and regulations that exist in certain types of products.

Platform Shipping Containers

40ft Platform Container
Platform shipping containers are open from all sides and just have a fixed floor. These containers are used for transporting products and materials that cannot fit to any of the other container types mentioned so far. Most of the times the products loaded on this containers also exceed the actual dimensions of the containers. This is the reason the platform shipping containers are completely open.

Platform containers can be connected with each other to create larger platforms for oversized and heavy load needs which exceed the standard platform size.

The most common dimensions for platform shipping containers are:

  • 20feet
  • 40feet
